Teaching About Attitudes and Values

Sometimes, what you are teaching won't be based on specific content or technical skills, but rather on helping learners develop understanding through self-exploration, reflection, and sharing with others. When I was completing my master's degree in counseling, other than a course on theory, we spent very little time mastering content from the knowledge base of the field. Rather, we focused on developing helping skills based on personal reflection and interaction with other learners. Here, the emphasis was on understanding ourselves and the attitudes and values that impacted how we worked with others in a helping relationship.

As a teacher of adults, much of your role will be to help adults learn to better understand themselves. Often, there is not a clear measurable outcome like “recall five theories of learning” or “develop a PowerPoint presentation.” Rather, in these instances, you are trying to help learners come to terms with their basic beliefs and, sometimes, to expand or even change these views in order to help them function more effectively. Examples might include developing skills to more effectively communicate and work with others and learning to understand and appreciate differences among people based on race, class, gender, sexual orientation, or even different positions on the issues that are being discussed in your class. Here, the emphasis is on helping learners look inward to better understand personal beliefs, attitudes, and values (sometimes referred to as the “affective domain”) in order to relate to others more effectively.

Many techniques can be used to explore the affective domain. For our purposes here, I will briefly cover discussion and role playing.
